Is anyone getting information security right?

In this issue's editor's note, I mention the spectacular failure on the part of prominent retailers (like TJX, which exposed at least 45 million records), government agencies (just this Saturday, the Transportation Safety Administration admitted to losing a laptop containing Social Security numbers and other personal data on 100,000 of its employees), and other organizations at preventing information theft--despite the compliance mandate to do so.

Will emerging best practices in data governance help organizations get their arms around the information security problem (not to mention other compliance-related issues)? With companies already facing public outcries, fines, and even jail-time for executives, what's it going to take to get businesses and vendors to plug the information leaks?

These are not rhetorical questions. If you have answers, let's hear them. Read the compliance and security articles, ponder my questions, and comment away.

DB2 Magazine gets the community spirit

Some of you have noticed that the first DB2 Magazine issue of the year is a few months later than usual. And, since you're reading this new blog, you've probably already guessed why: We've been busily working out the next chapter in the magazine's history.

In its first ten years, the magazine published great technical and introductory articles on DB2 and, eventually, Informix and other information management technologies. And we're continuing to do that. The latest issue (available in print and online) includes great how-to articles on DB2 security, Informix SQL scripts and performance tuning, plus coverage of IBM's FileNet acquisition and the Informix Dynamic Server (IDS) Cheetah beta program.

But in the magazine's second decade, we're trying something new, too: We're asking you to get involved, share your best ideas, comments, feedback, and experiences. Help make the new DB2 Magazine Community Wiki the best online technical resource for IBM information management outside of IBM itself. Many readers have ideas and tips they've been trying to share through the magazine for years, but we've been limited by print page availability. Now, there's an outlet for anyone to contribute their pent-up advice to the community.

You can help make this Web site the resource you want it to be. What are you going to make of it?
